Committee Description:

It is the year 1951, and the Americas are in turmoil.

The Republic of Guatemala, long shackled by foreign influences and feudal inequality, undertakes a daring experiment in democracy. New leaders arise under the banner of social reform and national sovereignty to free the land and its people from the old oligarchy and remnants of the past dictatorship. Behind the scenes, implacable enemies manoeuvre. The mighty United Fruit Company, threatened to lose its capitalistic empire, flexes its muscles abroad. Conservative generals, wealthy landowners, and reactionary politicians point an accusing finger and charge conspiracy. Beyond the borders, in the early Cold War mists, great powers spy closely. To some, Guatemala's revolution spells hope; to others, a communist spark. In the precarious balance between the forces of progress and conservation, intrigue and intervention brew.

Now, as the members of the Congress of the Republic and the National Security Council meet to confront the growing crisis and to decide the future of Guatemala. Will democracy work its miracle again, or will the same rough forces of fear and power reimpose the old order?
